Thermal Comfort Simulation

Specialist thermal comfort simulation across LEED, WELL and BREEAM scopes. ISO 7730 and ASHRAE 55 compliant. Operative temperature visualised per zone. Clothing schedules, setpoint temperature and seasonal performance graphed.

What we deliver.

  • PMV and PPD per ISO 7730. The international standard for thermal comfort prediction.
  • Operative temperature compliance per ASHRAE 55. The US standard, also referenced by WELL and LEED.
  • Comfort temperature visualisation at floor, zone and building level. Visual heatmaps reviewers can read at a glance.
  • Clothing schedules and setpoint temperatures per certification requirements.
  • Daily and seasonal performance graphs.
  • Future weather file scenarios. We also run thermal comfort simulation against predicted climate change scenarios using future weather files, so the comfort case holds up against the building’s actual service life.

Built for the climate your building will live in.

Buildings designed today operate for 30 to 60 years. The weather file used in the original simulation may not represent the conditions the building actually faces in 2050. On request, we run thermal comfort simulation against future weather file scenarios that reflect predicted climate change. This is increasingly relevant for premium developers, WELL certified buildings, and assets where long term resilience is part of the brief.

FAQ

What are PMV and PPD?
PMV is a 7 point scale prediction of thermal sensation, minus 3 cold to plus 3 hot, per ISO 7730. PPD is the percentage of occupants expected to be thermally uncomfortable at a given PMV. ISO 7730 Category B asks for PMV between minus 0.5 and plus 0.5 and PPD at or below 10 percent.
Adaptive comfort or PMV. Which model applies?

Adaptive comfort applies to naturally ventilated spaces. PMV applies to mechanically conditioned spaces. For most LEED, WELL and BREEAM projects in mechanically conditioned buildings, PMV is the correct model.

Why is PPD compliance harder on large zone count buildings?
Because each zone has different HVAC behaviour, internal load profile and envelope exposure. A single zone breaching PPD over 10 percent can fail the credit. On large projects we tune HVAC distribution, setpoint schedules and zone grouping until building wide compliance is reached.
Do you run future weather file simulations?

Yes. On request we run thermal comfort simulation against predicted climate change scenarios using future weather files.
