GHG Calculation

Specialist building and community level greenhouse gas calculation. Operational emissions derived from energy simulation outputs, local grid emission factors, transportation, water and wastewater systems, solid waste and district cooling. Engineered to ROSHN Sustainability Guidelines, Mostadam and Estidama requirements.

Project and community level operational GHG emissions

The sustainability frameworks our project portfolio operates under, ROSHN Sustainability Guidelines, Mostadam and Estidama, focus on operational greenhouse gas emissions associated with building operations and infrastructure systems at the project boundary. Our GHG calculation service is built around that scope. We derive carbon outputs from the energy simulation results, apply locally relevant grid emission factors, and account for transportation, water and wastewater, solid waste, district cooling and other on site or in scope emission sources. The output is a defensible tCO2e total for the building, calibrated to the certification body’s methodology, ready for the reviewer.

What we deliver

  • Inventory boundary definition. Determined in accordance with recognised GHG accounting protocols, including the GHG Protocol and, for community-scale projects, the Global Protocol for Community-Scale Greenhouse Gas Inventories (GPC). Project boundary fixed to the scheme’s requirements.
  • Operational emission sources within the project boundary, modelled and aggregated. Stationary energy. Transportation associated with the project. Waste sources. Water and wastewater systems. District cooling where applicable. External lighting, plug loads, generators, pumps and car parking facilities.
  • Scope 1 operational emissions. Stationary energy sources. Transportation sources. Waste sources, excluding emissions from imported waste, reported separately in the Scope 1 total.
  • Scope 2 operational emissions. Purchased electricity, heating and cooling.
  • Scope 3 emissions where required by the scheme. Treatment of exported waste under ROSHN.
  • Calculation against a continuous 12 month period. All seven Kyoto Protocol GHGs in scope. Final outputs in carbon dioxide equivalents, TonCO2e.
  • Comparison against the baseline building performance rating and the proposed building performance rating, expressed as percentage improvement. Linked to the Passive Design Measures credit family under ROSHN.
  • Documentation in the format reviewers expect. Methodology stated, assumptions logged, grid factors cited, emission factor sources referenced.

Reference Standards & Methodologies We Work To

  • Global Protocol for Community-Scale Greenhouse Gas Inventories, GPC.
  • ASHRAE 90.1-2016 Compliance pathways, Section 4.2.1.1.
  • ISO 52000-1:2017. Used to determine greenhouse gas emission factors for each building energy source consistently with the country or region where the project is located.
  • International Energy Agency national grid mix coefficients. Used to calculate GHG emissions by energy source.
  • Clean Development Mechanism Designated National Authority guidance.

Who Commissions This

Sustainability consultants delivering ROSHN, Mostadam or Estidama scopes who need GHG documentation aligned to the scheme's methodology. Real estate developers on Saudi residential programmes where ROSHN GHG Emissions Management is in scope. GCC developers running Estidama Pearl and Mostadam compliance programmes. MEP teams who need GHG outputs derived from the energy simulation already in development. Often bundled with our energy simulation engagements as an integrated scope, since the energy model is the primary input.

FAQ

Which sustainability frameworks does this GHG calculation cover?
ROSHN Sustainability Guidelines, Mostadam and Estidama. The methodology focuses on operational emissions at the project boundary, derived primarily from the energy simulation, with additional emission sources from transportation, water and wastewater, solid waste and district cooling captured where in scope.
Do you use the GHG Protocol?
Yes. We work to the GHG protocol applicable for buildings, including the Global Protocol for Community-Scale Greenhouse Gas Inventories where the project is at community scale. Scope 1 and Scope 2 operational emissions are included by default. Scope 3 categories are included where the scheme requires, for example treatment of exported waste under ROSHN.
Where do the grid emission factors come from?

Latest national grid mix coefficients from the International Energy Agency, applied consistently with ISO 52000-1:2017 for the country or region where the project is located.

Can the GHG output be bundled with the energy simulation?
Yes. Most of our GHG engagements are delivered alongside the energy simulation, since the energy model is the primary input. Bundled delivery is faster and lower cost than two sequential engagements.
